NotesInternational Congress - Agroforestry 2013takes place on 19th and 20th of February 2013 in the Ellington Hotel, Berlin.
Event type

In order to achieve the ambitious targets for an increased production and use of bioenergy, it is essential to consider the potential of agroforestry systems – that is to say the cultivation of wood for energy purposes on agricultural land. So far, the risks involved in such undertakings were quite high because of the bad calculability. This has considerably changed after modifications of the Federal Forest Act. According to the current jurisdiction, agricultural cultivation of woody plants like short rotation coppice (SRC) are no longer defined as forests but remain agricultural crop production. For this reason the land used for agroforestry systems keeps its agricultural status and therefore continues to be eligible for agriculture-related subsidies.

In the agricultural context, agroforestry systems are seen as cultivation of permanent crops, which can be used for about 20-30 years. The cultivation is done in short rotation intervals. That means the trees are harvested in relatively short intervals of 2-10 years (max. 20 years). After the harvest of the trees new sprouts grow from the remaining stocks.

To date, SRCs is cultivated on 4000 ha, in Germany. Hence, there is still much more potential for agroforestry systems.

In this context the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR), mandated by the German Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV), and the German Agriculture-Association (DLG) organises the 2nd International Agroforestry Congress.

We are looking forward to your participation and inspiring debates.
