BP 2 Workshop: Sustainable bioenergy for the future energy system : Brussels, Belgium

Time Jun 26, 2013
PlaceBrussels, Belgium
NotesBioenergy Promotion 2 has the status of a strategic project under the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) Programme and of a flagship project under the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The purpose of the workshop is to create a dialogue with the EU Commission, energy utilities and other stakeholders on sustainability principles and criteria applied to solid and gaseous biomass used in electricity, heating and cooling.
Event type

In the absence of binding EU wide sustainability criteria for solid and gaseous biomass energy utilities and grid transmission operators are increasingly setting up and implementing corporate sustainability schemes on a voluntary basis. The reasons are manifold: to secure and validate high GHG abatement compared to fossil fuels; to protect biodiversity; to limit negative direct and indirect land use changes; to ensure high resource efficiency and to increase social acceptance. The applied corporate sustainability criteria vary in scope, focus and have different chains-of-custody.

The workshop highlights similarities and differences between the various systems, their advantages and disadvantages taking into account actual policy developments at EU level, particularly the EU Commission’s plans to amend the existing sustainability framework for solid and gaseous biomass. We would highly appreciate if you could contribute to the workshop and share your opinion and comments.
